Jul 212012

But last week, that changed! I got three former Olley’s Armies models from Phantom Miniatures (a bit defunct, but email Francesco and he might have a few more models in stock); two rather large trolls and a huge frigging human ranger which towers over the old GW ogres I have. He’s going in the “for trade” bin.

The two trolls though, are intended for the chaos warband I’ve got planned for SOBH, with nothing but Bob Olley sculpts. They are big, but not too big. Handsome too! The left-most will be a troll giant (as he’s the same height as the largest old Metal Magic giants, which I have a few of). The other will be a giant troll. See the difference there. Eh?

These bring my total tally to 51 painted – 191 acquired = -140. Not counting the ranger above, and adding one to painted for the dwarf I painted for Adam.

The plastic WHFB dwarfs are coming along nicely, and I’ll post up a pic of all 16 painted soon.

Got this dwarf from a friend, to paint as payment for a few miniatures. I normally don’t do comissions as I have a hard time keeping up with my own lead but figured every once in a while a single miniature won’t hurt too much.

I'm a little teapot short and stout... if you tip me over, you'll get the axe!

And one from above...

Hopefully he’ll be happy with it! I think it turned out quite allright, but as usual I hate my most recent paintjob. Need to get some distance to it, I suppose. The dwarf was a bit tough to paint, as it was rough in places with poorly cast fingers etc.

For the leadheads it’s not too hard to recognize him. Classic mid- to late 80’s Perry twins dwarf adventurer, from Citadel as always.

In my last post, I listed the miniatures that I want the most. This time, I’m listing the ones I “need” the most to fill gaps in the collection, and that I will indeed eventually get my hands on (save #1).

The list of stuff that I really really need and actually aim to get (except for Osrim)

#10. BDD1 Treasure Chest
Not much to say – it’s a chest, and apart from the cleric it’s the only part I miss from the BDD1 set. No doubt harder to come by than the cleric himself.

#9. Smiorgan Baldhead
This Eternal Champions chap have been on my radar for a long time. He’s not part of a systematic collection, but intended for a warband project. I really like it, it’s not unattainable and I would put it to good use straight away. That’s the reason it’s on this list and not the other one.

#8. Grograt Crunchskull
Blood Bowl troll star player sculpted by Bob Olley. Another one I used to own but stupidly sold off in a fit of downsizing. For my Dungeon Bowl teams.

Pic from White Dwarf

 #7. Morg’n’throg
Ogre star player, also by Olley. Also had this once upon a time. Yeah, you know the story by now. Dumb…

#6. Bugman’s champion
This peglegged little freak is apparently quite rare and often goes for stupid money ™ on eBay. I would very much like one, to complete my RR1.

Pic from SoL

#5. Owd Rodger (aka Thug with dagger #2) and/or Nob
For my Felix & Gotrek goes 3rd edition minis project. He’d be part of the sewer jack team our heroes join. Great figs, really!

Pic from SoL

#4. Harboth’s Musician
The only model missing from the old pre-slotta Harboth’s. If you have one, please have a heart and sell him to me. The rest of the regiment are based and primed just waiting for this chap to join before painting.

#3. Mayor Leofwine
The good Mayor from the Orc’s Drift scenario isn’t even scenario specific but is still rare as hen’s teeth. From the very first line of slotta figs, I assume many have succumbed to rot what with the metal quality being rather dodgy and all.

#2. Guthrum Mane (aka Giant Hilltroll)
Big nasty troll, also from Orc’s Drift – but not scenario specific. Doesn’t seem to be very rare, but I always miss out while everybody around me seem to get these on bargains. Not fair!

#1. Osrim Chardz, again…
Yeah, he made #1 on this list too. Bastard.

I do have some honorable mentions for this list too, that didn’t quite make it because they’re either too dull for a list or I couldn’t decide on what to drop in their place.

* Original Bugman’s musician – I can view my regiment as complete without this chap and have actually passed on buying one, but if I would get one I would feel quite warm and fuzzy inside knowing the gang is one step closer to completion.

* Mudat’s half orc maniacs command – I only have the standard bearer (and lots of troopers), I really want these but not enough to dedicate three slots on the list for them.

* The BDD1 cleric – Would definitely get one if I came across it, but for some reason I don’t really feel like I care much. The chest listed above seems more important. Odd…

* Grom’s original musician (pre-slotta) and champion (pre-slotta RR but slotta model, weird huh?) – These would actually be really, really nice. They should’ve been on the list, but I couldn’t decide on what NOT to put on the list if they went on it.

Last month, a lot of people in the “oldhammer blogoshpere” (jeez) listed their top ten wants. Found it quite entertaining to leaf through but never got around to make my own list. Until now. This is me, getting on the band wagon a few weeks late. Enjoy! I’ve split my list into two, actually. One for stuff that I obsess about from a collectionitis perspective, and one for stuff that I just think is cool.

The list of Cool Stuff that I really really want

#10. Heinrich Kemmler, the original Lichemaster
A classic villain from a classic scenario. A fun fig, but too damn expensive to justify buying.

Pic from SOL

#9. Citadel Giant Spider
Standard creepy crawly, but a giant spider never goes out of style. Want one!

Pic from Tea's Getting Cold

#8. Skrag the Slaughterer
Fantastic ogre by Jes Goodwin. The ultimate second in comand for an evil nemesis or boss ogre for an ogre warband.

Pic from CMON

#7. Ambull
Science Fantasy wierdness that would work just as well as a demonic fantasy monster as a science fiction dito.

Pic from SOL

#6. Blood Bowl Troll #2
Bob Olley sculpted a few trolls for 2nd edition Blood Bowl that weren’t widely circulated. This is one of them, the other I already have (Troll #3). It’s not super duper rare, but doesn’t appear often.

Pic from Blood Bowl Old Skool Picture Archive

#5. Citadel Cockatrice
This is another of those classic dungeon critters you just need to have if you plan any serious random encounter gaming. Also, it’s appropriately sized. Nowadays a cockatrice is apparently a huge behemoth. As usual, the 80s win over the nowies.

Pic from The Owlbear's Lair

#4. Dragon Ogre
What can be said… it’s big, mean looking and bloody awesome!

Pic from SOL

#3. Snotling Pumpwagon
I used to own one. Now I don’t. Stupid!

Pic from The Art of War

#2. Marauder Giant
The quintessential giant, if you (like me) were introduced to WHFB in the early 90s. Prior to that I had only played and collected Blood Bowl and never even had much of a look at other GW stuff apart from a stray blister of dwarfs and some Judge Dredd stuff. This is something I really would want to get my mitts on!

Pic from SOL

#1. Osrim Chardz
So rare a google image search won’t even give you any pics of him painted, thus the only bare metal image in this list. Not that great a fig, but getting one would crown my Orc’s Drift collection. This is my grail mini, no question about it.

That’s it for the really nice stuff that I would rather like to have. Next, I’ll post the “gottacatchemall” list of 10 most coveted chunks o’ lead.

Jul 062012

Yeah, what the hell – Fantasy Battle?! I honestly can’t say what happened – but I picked up WHFB3 a few years ago and read the rules a month ago or so. It got me thinking that I ought to try it sometime. My basing standard doesn’t lend itself well to WHFB, so I started thinking about how I could arrange some cheap forces without too much hassle. I remembered the old 90s plastic single piece clone casts that are quite dull, but if painted properly can look good enough. I have 16 of the dwarfs, I’ve tried to sell them on many occasions but never succeeded. How fortunate! I’ve painted these as fast as possible, which in my case means black primer, base coats (with as few colours as possible) and then completely covered with washes. I then highlight using the base colour, and occasionally a lighter shade of the base colour. I’ll try switching up the base colours between my batches of five, the next five will have another blue for the tunic, and another brown for the boots and shoulderthingamajig.

Attack of the clones!

Here’s a pic of 6 of them. 10 more to go, and I have a unit. If I can (sloooowly, I’ve learned my lessons) gather some more dwarfness I should have about 1000 pts painted up “in no time”. 1000 points don’t make an army, but with 1000 pts worth of dwarfs, 1000 pts worth of men and 1000 pts worth of elves I ought to have enough to make one “good” army. I’ll do the same for orcs, goblins, chaos, skaven and so forth.

There are many sources of this type of models. Here are the few I’ve identified:
Dwarf handweapon – Advanced HeroQuest (hero, champion or similar)
Dwarf twohanded weapon – HeroQuest (another hero or somesuch)
Dwarf handweapon and shield – 90’s plastic warriors boxed sets
Dwarf handweapon and shield – Psychostyrene
Dwarf handweapon and shield – Warhammer Regiments
Dwarf handweapon – Talisman 3rd edition
Dwarf dragon slayer – Talisman 3rd edition, City

I’ll round that out with some of EM4’s quite genious plastic dwarfs from the old Fantasy Warriors boxed set, as they have crossbows and only cost a few pence each.

Finally, I’ve got a WIP pic of a dwarf I’m painting for Adam/thebinmann from LAF. I usually don’t post WIPs like this, but wanted to share the progress with Adam.

Basecoat and shading, but no highlights yet.

Edit: Forgot to update my tally for 2012! With these 6 chaps painted, I’m now at 50 painted – 189 acquired = -140. It’s getting better. Slowly. =) Nothing new for quite some time now, but then again I haven’t painted much either. I’ll try to concentrate on smaller things for a while when I’m done with the dwarfs. Might help me bolster the numbers a bit. Got three models incoming, but more on that when they get here.
